Rhythm in the Cubic Architectural System
Recent architectural literature dealt with cubism as a movement ofart and
Architecture directly or through a specified phenomenon which relates the two
indirectly. This research deali with the System in Cubism according to the
Structuralist Methodology which concentrates on three characteristics: Totality,
Transformations and Seli-control. At its first stage this rescarch attempts to clarify
these tlree characteristics concentrating on the architectural freld. It extacted the
formal tools used to reinforce the system in the architectural product' too'
Rhythm emerged amongst ihese tools, rhythm as a major tool was defined, its
importance was pointed out and its types were demonstrated. At its second stage, the
res'earch ried to explote the nature of rhythm in the Twenties Revivalism Approach.
The results showed that architects use the layered rhythm in facades through the use
of multi planes which include grids, walls and elements ilterfering with each other to
achieve the totality of the facades ,
thus reinforcing its cubic system'
The conclusions confirm that Twenties Revivalism Approach in architecture
had been affected by cubism as a movement of art and supporting the context of some
parts of literature.
