Many studies were generalty concerned with tlr,: concept of ugliness (especially in the field of
architecture) from different perspectives, and in a bricf and inclusive way. The research problem focused on
the absence of a clear definition of the concept of aesthr tic ugliness and its role in the aesthetic experience,f
architecture. and this is rvhat the present research airri,; to discover, Depending on the researcS hypotlresis
which states that there is a relation between aesthetic ugliness and aesthetic appreciation of architecture.'l'hc
importaltce of the research arises front comprehending the nleasLrres and bases of aesthetic cvaluation that
are more diverse, and increasing the possibility of attaiuing the pleasLrre of the aesthetic appreciation .f
architecture. As to the research methodology', thr: studl of aesthetic ugliness hinges on two nrain axes. T6e
first deals with the constructiott of a tlteoretical data sase to define the concept of aesthetic ugliness by
investigating and analyzing the treatises artd the existr rg literarure in the varior.rs fields of knowledge tSat
involved the concept directly or indirectly. lrr ttre SC.ond. the aforementioned data base is invested a.rj
enhanced by the architectural treatises and stuclies tbr extractirrg the specialty of the aesthetic ugliness
concept in architecture,
The conclusion of this research is that (ugliness) h:ls aesthetic values thal can be discovered througlr
aesthetic judgment of architectural products by ap1:reciating and criticizing the aesthetic experience
according to critical aesthetic bases (subjective.,rbjeclJve or both), as a wider perspective of the aestheric;
phenomenon in architecture.
